Mountain Pygmy Possum
The Project
2012
Only a few hundred Mountain Pygmy Possums remain in just 3 isolated populations. FAME supported a groundbreaking project aimed at increasing the viability of Mountain Pygmy Possum population at Mt Buller by introducing greater genetic diversity through cross breeding with Possums from a separate population. Within the first year a 50% increase in the Mt Buller population was observed. The excellent result from this project has provided the necessary evidence that will allow this strategy to be used save other endangered species.
