FAME established a colony of critically endangered Mainland Mala (previously extinct in New South Wales) at Scotia Sanctuary in NSW.
Endangered Mala at Scotia
The Project
Previous attempts to release the Mala back into its former home range had failed with all released animals being taken by foxes and feral cats. FAME helped reintroduce the Mala into a the fox and feral cat proof environment of the Scotia Sanctuary in New South Wales, which is the largest fox and cat free area on the mainland of Australia. It is hoped recent advances in fox and cat control could mean the Marla may one day be released back in to its former habitat across central Australia.
