SPECIES: Westringia cremnophila — Snowy River Westringia
CLASSIFICATION: Critically endangered
The Snowy River Westringia is a remarkable shrub found only in the wilds of Victoria. It thrives on the rugged cliffs of the Snowy River gorge, where its soft, grey-green leaves and delicate lilac flowers make it a stunning standout. This hardy plant has evolved to survive harsh conditions, clinging to steep, rocky habitats that many other species can’t endure.
With fewer than 400 individuals left in its natural habitat – and now listed as critically endangered – its limited range makes it vulnerable to threats like habitat loss, invasive weeds, and climate change. Bushfires, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, also pose a significant risk to this already precarious population. Conservation efforts, including habitat protection, invasive species control, and seed banking, are vital to ensure the survival of this unique plant.
