SPECIES: Neophema chrysostoma — Blue-winged Parrot

CLASSIFICATION: Vulernable

Did you know...there are only three species of parrot that make a regular, yearly migration over an ocean or sea? The Blue-winged Parrot is one of the lucky three. Unluckily, it is also a species under the threat of extinction. Characterised as a small, slender parrot, olive-green in colouring with a dark blue patch on the wings it predominantly feeds on grass seeds on the ground. Its ancestors are the Rock Parrot and Elegant Parrot, species which diverged up to 3+ million years ago. Incredible. In order to help protect the lineage of this species for future generations to come, protection from the threats of habitat loss, degradation, fragmentation and removal as well as predation by invasive species must continue to be managed.
