SPECIES:
Macquarie Perch (Macquaria australasica)
CLASSIFICATION:
Endangered
There are even fish species that make the threatened species list.
The Macquarie Perch is an Australian freshwater fish, native to the Murray-Darling river system. Placid by nature, they have unfortunatley proven difficult to breed artifically, making it harder to develop a plan to help recover declining numbers. Major causes to the decline of the species include overfishing, pollution of waterways and an endemic disease fatal to the Macquarie Perch which originated from an introduced species.
